There have been some recent changes to the working holiday visa programme, including an increase in age limits and length which may encourage travellers to NZ. So are working holiday visa holidays right for your hospitality business? Below are a list of things to consider about hiring WHV holders.
The Benefits:
- WHV holders can start working in New Zealand without the need for a Job Check or employer support, which is unlike the Accredited Employer Work Visa.
- WHV holders have the flexibility to work in different locations and positions throughout the country without the need for a new Work Visa, Job Change or Variation of Visa conditions.
- No median wage or minimum guaranteed hours requirements: This means that WHV holders have more opportunities to take on different types of work and may not be restricted by specific wage or hour requirements.
- The age limit for the WHV program has been increased to 35 years old for some countries, which means more experienced and skilled workers may have the opportunity to come to New Zealand.
- WHV holders are currently able to work for non-accredited employers. However, changes are being introduced from 2024 onwards, where employers must be accredited to employ those on a visa.
Things to Consider:
- Short-term or part-time work: The WHV program may not be ideal for those who only want short-term or part-time work while travelling, as it is designed for temporary work and travel.
- Restrictions to the residence pathway: WHV employment cannot be counted towards the 2-year period required for certain Work to Residence pathways. This means that those who want to use their time in New Zealand to work towards permanent residency may need to explore other visa options or find alternative ways to meet the eligibility criteria.
- Limited eligibility to support visas for partners or children: WHV holders cannot sponsor their partners or children for certain visa types. This may be a disadvantage for those who want to travel with their families or bring their loved ones to New Zealand to join them during their stay. However, they may choose to apply for other visa types to enable them to do so.
