Valentine’s Day Dining: How Restaurants Can Make the Most of the Occasion

7 Feb 25

Valentine’s Day is a key event on the hospitality calendar, offering restaurants the chance to attract diners looking for a special experience. New research from DineFind has revealed that plenty of Kiwis are planning to dine out this Valentine’s Day, particularly younger food lovers and frequent diners.

Understanding Your Valentine’s Day Audience

If your restaurant targets diners in their late 20s, you’re in luck—50% of those aged 26-30 plan to dine out, followed closely by 38% of those aged 21-25. Frequent restaurant-goers are also embracing the occasion, with 44% of those who dine out four or more times per week planning a special meal. With this group spending an average of $192 per week on dining, they represent a valuable customer base for the industry.

What Diners Want on Valentine’s Day

To maximise bookings and revenue, restaurants should consider what makes a Valentine’s experience special for guests. Themed cocktails and exclusive dishes are the top attraction, with 57% of diners saying these extras enhance the occasion. However, flexibility is also key—44% of diners prefer the option to choose between a set menu and their usual à la carte favorites.

There’s also growing interest in extending the Valentine’s offering beyond February 14, with 25% of diners preferring to celebrate on alternative dates. Live music also ranks high, with a quarter of diners saying it adds to the atmosphere.

Other elements that diners appreciate include romantic touches such as roses, chocolates, or themed décor (17% of diners). On the other hand, set booking times are the least appealing, with only 13% of diners interested in this option—so consider offering flexible seating arrangements.

Tips for Restaurants to Make the Most of Valentine’s Day

  • Offer Themed Menu Items – Special dishes and cocktails tailored to the occasion can be a big draw.
  • Balance Set and À La Carte Menus – Giving diners options increases appeal and ensures you cater to different preferences.
  • Extend the Celebration – Promote Valentine’s specials for the days leading up to and following February 14 to capture additional bookings.
  • Create an Experience – Whether it’s live music, romantic décor, or small surprises like complimentary chocolates, experiential elements can set your restaurant apart.
  • Encourage Early Bookings – With demand high among younger diners and frequent restaurant-goers, securing bookings in advance helps with planning and maximising revenue.

Valentine’s Day presents a fantastic opportunity for the hospitality sector to drive bookings and deliver memorable experiences for guests. With the right approach, restaurants can make the most of this romantic occasion and ensure their tables are full of happy diners.
