The 2024 Q4 Hospitality Sales Snapshot provides top line sales statistics on the hospitality industry.
As we wrapped up 2024, there was a noticeable shift in the sentiment across New Zealand’s hospitality industry. While the fourth quarter still presented some of the most demanding conditions we’ve seen—marked by economic pressures, workforce shortages, and shifting consumer behavior—there was also a growing sense of optimism among operators. Many operators have indicated that while staffing challenges and tighter customer discretionary spending remain front of mind, the promise of events and international tourism hints at a potential uplift ahead.
With data sourced from Statistics New Zealand and the Restaurant Association, the Q4 Report provides relevant data on the state of the hospitality industry.
Selected highlights:
- Total sales for the industry over the 4th quarter of 2024, representing a 3.2 per cent sales increase over the same quarter a year previous.
- The dollar value increase in sales for the hospitality industry over the 4th quarter of 2024 vs the 3rd quarter.
- Dollar value of sales for the restaurant and cafe sector for the 4th quarter of 2024. This sector has a 48.8 per cent sales market share of the industry overall.
- Regionally, revenue growth in the Queenstown-Lakes region was the most significant for the 4th quarter of 2024 vs the previous year. In dollar value, the region increased from $113.2 million sales in Q4 2023 to $133.6 million sales in Q4 2024. Kaikoura’s revenue growth was also significant at 25.5 per cent growth over the same period the year previous.
