2nd quarter 2021 – quarterly Hospitality Report

The quarterly Hospitality Reports are released 4 times per annum, providing top line quarterly sales statistics on the hospitality industry.

With data sourced from Statistics New Zealand and the Restaurant Association, the Reports provides relevant data on the state of the hospitality industry.

The 2nd quarter 2021 Hospitality Report includes:

  • Executive overview
  • Industry sales data by sector (restaurants & cafés; pubs, taverns & bars; catering; food to go; and clubs), showing sales trend over the current 2nd quarter of 2021 vs 2020, as well as the previous quarter (March 2021)
  • Regional outlook for sales, covering the following regions:  Northland Region, Auckland Region, Waikato Region, Bay of Plenty Region, Gisborne Region, Hawke’s Bay Region, Taranaki Region, Manawatu-Wanganui Region, Wellington Region, West Coast Region, Tasman Region, Nelson Region, Marlborough Region, Kaikoura, Canterbury Region excl Kaikoura, Otago Region excl Queenstown-Lakes, Queenstown-Lakes, Southland Region

Topline stats

  • Total sales for the industry over the 2nd quarter of 2021 were $3.36 billion , reflecting growth of 91.5 per cent over the same quarter in 2020. Quarterly sales at that time were $1.75 billion, due to the financial impacts of alert level changes as a result of the covid-19 community outbreak.
  • Sales revenue for the industry for the period April – June 2021 grew by $279.6 million over the previous quarter (Q1 2021) – representing growth of 9.1%.
  • The dollar value of sales for the restaurant and cafe sector over the 2nd quarter of 2021 was $1.72 billion . This sector has a 51.3 per cent market share of the industry overall.
  • Kaikōura had the largest percentage decline in sales revenue vs the first quarter of 2021 of -16.2%. Three other regions experienced a revenue decline in the 2nd quarter compared to 1st quarter of 2021 – West Coast South Island, Tasman and Southland.
  • Auckland region sales from April – June 2021 were $1.32 billion. This reflects growth of 17% over the period January – March 2021.
