Safety and Security

This survey was conducted in May 2024. The survey sought feedback on the impact of crime levels.

Key findings:

  • 33 per cent of businesses saying they have been a victim of crime in the last six months. In Auckland that figure rose to 43 per cent according to a survey conducted by the
    Restaurant Association.
  • 50 per cent of businesses nationwide said they have noticed an increase in crime in their area over the past six months.
  • Over a third of business owners had also noticed an increase in aggressive behaviour from customers.
  • 46 per cent of businesses nationwide said they were now concerned for the safety of themselves and their teams when travelling to and from work.

MEMBER FEEDBACK:

“Theft and vandalism has increased, added security cameras but police don’t have time to follow up on it, so no point in even making a police report . We now have to keep a petrol can to fill our catering van for use as the petrol is siphoned out and it’s always empty.”

“We need tighter police patrols in Auckland Central and around Karangahape Road. Some accommodations {in CBD] are housing a lot of unpleasant people, also overall the amount of homeless and drug/alcohol induced people around the Central Akl areas, is becoming a much more deeper concern for businesses and people visiting or living in Central Auckland. The bar next to us was broken into a few months ago. I am not confident we will survive.”

“More Police on the streets at night. We make sure our staff are either picked up or not walking too far. If we are worried we drop them off.”
